The advice set out below should be followed when visiting religious sites:
- Respect requests for foreigners not to enter the inner sanctum of certain temples. Signboards outside usually state this.
- Remove shoes before entering any religious temple or shrine.
- Do not take items made of leather into religious places.
- Move in a clockwise direction.
- Ask permission before taking photographs.
- Do not step on or over anything that has red powder or flower and or rice offerings on it.
- Do not sit or climb on statues.
- Refrain from eating or smoking at religious sites.
- Do not touch offerings, or touch or disturb people carrying offerings or performing rituals.
- Be quiet and respectful in behaviour, aware that these are places of worship.
- Give any donation in odd numbers. Odd numbers are considered auspicious, e.g. 101 rupees rather than 100. Some temples, however have a standard entry fee.
