The advice set out below should be followed when visiting religious sites:

  • Respect requests for foreigners not to enter the inner sanctum of certain temples. Signboards outside usually state this.
  • Remove shoes before entering any religious temple or shrine.
  • Do not take items made of leather into religious places.
  • Move in a clockwise direction.
  • Ask permission before taking photographs.
  • Do not step on or over anything that has red powder or flower and or rice offerings on it.
  • Do not sit or climb on statues.
  • Refrain from eating or smoking at religious sites.
  • Do not touch offerings, or touch or disturb people carrying offerings or performing rituals.
  • Be quiet and respectful in behaviour, aware that these are places of worship.
  • Give any donation in odd numbers. Odd numbers are considered auspicious, e.g. 101 rupees rather than 100. Some temples, however have a standard entry fee.
